Chillout with this Yoga move

Summer heat. We haven’t been blessed the sunniest summer so far, but the mercury is slowly climbing, and the London underground commute is getting stickier by the day.

The cold that permeates our very bones throughout winter is truly thawed now, and the body is returning to a softer, more supple state, as we no longer need to brace ourselves against the cold. People are gathering outside on their lunch breaks from work, and offering their skin up to the sun gods, soaking in the solar energy through their pores. Days can feel endless and full of adventure and possibility.

Bakasana/Crow Pose

There have been some serious ups and downs so far, but the remainder of the year is looking like one big celebration from here, I’m enjoying my work, loving watching my friendships develop and go deeper, and later in the year I’m getting married…twice! (Long story, but yes it’s to the same man both times). Of course there are also difficult things going on in my life, in the lives of those I love, and in the wider global situation (like always) and I’ve been spending time connecting to that too… but in this present moment, despite it all, the world feels like a splendid place to be, and I wish I could bottle the feeling and store it in a dusty cupboard somewhere, for the darker days.

Blossoming in Spring | Exalted Warrior

Blossoming in Spring | Exalted Warrior

Spring gifts us an extra hour of daylight. What a blessing! Suddenly it feels easier to drop by the pub or park on my way home from teaching than it does when the days are shorter.  While it’s still light tomorrow is still a long way off, and I don’t need to consider it, (or the to-do list that accompanies it), until the sun goes down which frees up mental space for lazy sunshine socialising and long walks through the park. It’s easy to get stuck in the routine grind of work and housework, but Spring is the ultimate time to put off doing the washing and go wandering in the sunshine with old and new friends instead. It will make you feel more alive, and connected, and fulfilled.

Fertility Yoga: Happy Baby

Fertility Yoga: Happy Baby

As I write this, nature is showcasing its rich fertility all around me; the blossom is blossoming, the daffodils are nodding away, their bright yellow heads demanding“Look at me! Look at me! I’m ALIIIIIVE!” and the rich, dark earth is begging to be probed and forked and implanted deeply with little seedlings that will bloom and ripen later in the year. It makes sense then, for this month’s theme to center around fertility and the sowing of seeds.

Spring Clean: Parivrtta Anjaneyasana

This idea of spring cleaning can be mirrored on our mats with our physical yoga practice. As the days get longer, and the layers come off, there is a feeling of wanting to be light footed and energised.
